Local youth are becoming global citizens. After hearing about the recent earthquake disaster in Haiti, Port Colborne High School students Chace King and Annie Salvage created Haiti-Stock, a benefit concert to support Free the Children and its relief efforts.

King says he was looking for a venue at which to host an event of his own after hearing that his school’s Battle of the Bands had been cancelled. He says he saw the opportunity to help those in Haiti and teamed with Salvage to organize the benefit.

Salvage says she was eager to get involved. “I am greatly passionate about the state of our earth and am constantly looking for a way to help,” says Salvage. “This seemed like the perfect time to really get everyone together to help a cause that is so deserving of our attention and support.”

The concert will be on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at The Hub, a youth-friendly café that hosts community events, at 72 Charlotte St. in Port Colborne. All proceeds will be donated to Free the Children, an organization with which Salvage has done previous work, including a trip to Kenya last August.

“I feel as though I have deep roots with this organization and know the money will be going where it needs to go,” says Salvage. They hope to raise $1,000 for relief efforts in Haiti.

Several local bands and solo artists will be providing entertainment throughout the evening including Pompeii Henge, Universal Thought, Beth Moore, Validity, Prophets of Charlotte and Babbar.

Tickets cost $5.
