Sometimes, you just have to do things yourself. After playing in several bands (that eventually broke up because of to the usual reasons of a lack of time or band members moving away to go to school), St. Catharines’ Mike Cameron decided to write and record his own six-song CD.

“I was going to go for a big band: a few guitarists, a drummer, bass, keyboard player – the whole shebang,” says Cameron, 20. “[But] I just decided to keep it a three-piece, to keep it nice and simple.”

Cameron chose his friends Jay Falone and Jordan Phelan, both 20, to play drums and bass respectively. “Jay [has] been a drummer of mine since high school,” says Cameron.

“We’ve jammed on a lot of projects.” “The music’s great and it’s really fun to play,” says Falone. “It’s just a great time.” “We definitely try to [work in] a fun atmosphere,” says Cameron.

“We take it seriously but we find a middle ground.” Cameron says he will be writing music for as long as possible and enjoys the format of being the main songwriter and bandleader. “So far the band we have now is fantastic, and I wouldn’t think of changing it at all,” he says.

“We’re just going to keep plugging away, and I’d really like to take it as far as we can possibly go.” Cameron’s music could very well go far. Even at the trio’s first performance, the audience was “singing along; they all seemed to know the songs,” says Falone.

“It really helped us play the show better.” Cameron says it was “really strange” to have so many people singing along to his songs at his first gig as a solo artist. “But a ‘good’ strange, a really good strange.”

Cameron and his band will be performing Feb. 5 with illScarlett and USS at the CAW Hall at 124 Bunting Rd. in St. Catharines.
