Niagara College students at the Welland campus have been given the chance to leave their mark. The ongoing transformation of the college involves the construction of several new buildings, including a new student centre.

Students have been given the opportunity to name the new student centre, which will be replacing After Hours. The new student centre will be a two-storey great hall, ideal for special events.

Other features include an alumni lounge, games room, enhanced bar and food serving facilities, meeting rooms and offices. There will also be access to an outdoor patio and volleyball court. “I think the name matters … it’s a place for students, [so] students should name it,” says Tyler Moore, a first-year Electronic Engineering student.

“I think it’s great that students are being asked to contribute to the naming of the new student centre. It only makes sense to me,” says Kevin Reid, a recent Niagara College graduate. “When it comes to a pub or student centre, student involvement is more important than anyone or anything.”

The contest began on Jan. 11 and will run until Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. The winner will receive a $1,000 trip voucher to travel anywhere he or she wants. “We need things like this in order to get students involved and excited about their school,” says Dale Addison, a second-year social work student. “

The $1,000 prize is cool, but the advertisement for this contest could have been better. A Blackboard announcement or mass email would make more students aware of the contest.” The Student Administrative Council at the Welland campus is asking students to drop off their suggestion, student ID number and contact information before Feb. 8.
